Truthfully, this could be one of the most one-sided matches in the World Cup. The game takes place on the 20th June and will be the second match for both countries. Saudi Arabia’s first match is the opening fixture of the tournament against hosts Russia, where as Uruguay’s first match is against Egypt.
Saudi Arabia came through second in their qualification group behind Japan. Uruguay also came through second in the much tougher South American qualification group, finishing, impressively, ahead of Argentina and Colombia.
The teams have only met twice before, the most recent being a friendly back in October of 2014 which finished 1-1 after a last-minute equaliser from Saudi Arabia. In 2002 Saudia Arabia beat Uruguay 3-2 in another friendly. Don’t look too much into these results though!
Uruguay V Saudi Arabia World Cup 2018
If Saudi Arabia get anything from this game, it would be a massive shock. Uruguay have some truly outstanding footballers in their squad with the likes of Luis Suarez, Edison Cavani, Diego Godin, Gaston Ramirez and Cristiano Rodriguez pulling the strings for the South Americans. The attacking prowess of Uruguay will in all likelihood overwhelm Saudi Arabia, and Suarez and Cavani could help themselves to a goal or two. If Saudi Arabia can keep the scoreline down to a one or two goal difference, they will have done well.
Uruguay will surely have too much for Saudi Arabia in this match. If Uruguay beat Egypt in their first game, as they are expected to, a victory in this match would guarantee Uruguay’s place in the knockout stages.
As for Saudi Arabia, unfortunately for them, we just cannot see them finishing in any position but bottom in their group. Russia, Egypt and Uruguay are all better sides than them and we expect all three countries to beat Saudi Arabia.
