With the World Cup round of 16 coming to an end this week, here at GoWin it's all systems go. We're weighing up each qualified country's chances at surviving the next stage of the competition – the quarter-finals.

On Saturday, both France and Uruguay won their knock-out stage matches, meaning they'll be playing each other in the first quarter-final of the World Cup 2018. This match will take place on Friday the 6th of July, and it's already looking likely to be a close call.

At the moment, France are the early favourites to win and they're current odds of qualifying to the semi-finals stand at around 4/9. In contrast, Uruguay's odds of qualifying are averaging about 7/4 at the moment.

That being said, both teams are classed as real contenders to become overall winner of the 2018 World Cup, and so there's still everything to play for. In this article, we'll look at this quarter-final match in more detail and provide you with:

  • All the most appealing odds
  • Expert betting tips and match predictions
  • All the statistics about both teams' recent performances

Betting Tips for Uruguay vs France

As we've just mentioned, France are the current favourites to win this match and the odds being offered by many UK bookmakers reflect this.

However, unlike some matches in this competition, this result is by no means a foregone conclusion and so the longer odds on Uruguay are looking very appealing too.

Here's how the current odds on winning within normal time (90 minutes) are looking at the moment:

  • France to Win: 1/1
  • Uruguay to Win: 7/2
  • Draw (Before Extra-Time and Penalties): 9/4

As you can see from the odds above, France are boasting odds of evens to win this match. Whilst this would be a very smart bet, we can also see the appeal of backing Uruguay at considerably longer odds.

Personally, we'd take the less valuable bet on France to ensure our safety. However, we'd also advise you to make some more specific bets on the match, which are looking much more lucrative.

Match event markets such as chances of a penalty, which players will score and chances of a red card are all looking very valuable.

However, to back any of these markets you do need a firm knowledge of the stats on each teams and how they've performed so far. Luckily, we've provided all these for you below, alongside our expert betting tips.

Our Match Predictions for Uruguay vs France

As you can see from the stats listed above, Uruguay and France have met fairly regularly in the last few years, yet four out of five matches have ended with a 0-0 draw. This means the teams are fairly well matched yet we do think the kind of playing style displayed this World Cup suits Les Bleus more.

That being said, Uruguay head into this match looking strong. They've won their four opening games of the WorldCup 2018 so far, with Portugal's goal in the Round of 16 being the first they've conceded in six games.

Big players such as Suarez and Cavani have made them a team to be feared, and we definitely think they can compete with France for at least the majority of the 90 minutes.

France, on the other hand, have only won three of their four World Cup 2018 opening matches. Les Bleus drew to Denmark in the group stages, yet they've looked formidable throughout.

In their Round of 16 game against Argentina, they put on a spellbinding show, with teenage star Kylian Mbappe standing out from the crowd. There are however, some defensive weaknesses in the French squad, but a strong offensive strategy from manager Deschamps will balance this out easy.

Specialised Betting Tips

As you can tell by now, this is expected to be a fraught and close match. The two teams are both performing well, yet we would still choose to go with the bookies and back France to win this quarter final game.

That being said, with even odds, it would be very wise to dig a little deeper. Our first tip is to back France to win, but for both teams to also score. We think this is entirely likley and with the current odds standing at around 17/4, it's also a very valuable wager.

On the other hand, we also like the look of Les Bleus to win with a score of 2-1, within 90 minutes. Although when the teams have met in the past it has often led to a goalless draw, we think both teams are hungrier than ever to progress.

We think Uruguay will compete and the score will remain at 1-1 until the second half, where France will edge it in the final stage of the game.

Here are some of our other favourite wagers to back on this match:

  • HT/FT Draw/France: 7/2
  • France to Win by One Goal: 12/5
  • France to Win 2-1: 9/1
  • France to Score in Both Halves: 3/1
  • Match Going to Extra Time: 9/4

Who Will Score For Uruguay?

Luis Suarez

Suarez has already scored two goals in the World Cup 2018, one of which being against Russia – another team who are through to the Quarter-Final stages of the competiton.

In a normal game, Suarez would be paried with Cavani up-front, and the two make an incredible duo. However, Cavani went off injured in Uruguay's match against Portugal and it's still not yet known if he will be fit for this match against France.

Although Uruguay will feel weaker without Cavani, this could create more scoring opportunities for Suarez and so, we think it's very likely he will score in this match.

Odds on Suarez To Score Anytime: 9/5

Expected Uruguay Line-Up:

Uruguay's manager, Oscar Tabarez, has sent out very similar starting 11's for his last 2 games, with only one change of player. Whilst this usually would leave us to believe he would send out a very similar squad for the match against France, as we've just mentioned, Uruguay's star striker Cavani may be unfit and therefore changes will be neccessary.

Below we've outline which players will start for Uruguay against France and have included Cavani in this list for now. However, should it be revealed that the striker cannot play, we expect Tabarez to call upon Stuani to fill his position.

Goalkeeper: Muslera

Defenders: Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt

Midfielders: Nandez, Torreira, Vecino, Betancur

Forwards: Cavani, Suarez

Who Will Score For France?

Kylian Mbappe

At just 19 years of age, Kylian Mbappe is already a force to be reckoned with. The PSG striker performed incredibly in France's last match against Argentina, playing a huge part in three out of the four goals France scored. Not only did Mbappe earn France the penalty which Greizmann converted, but he also bagged two goals of his own.

Odds on Mbappe to Score Anytime: 11/5

Expected France Line-Up:

France manager Didier Deschamps has sent a similar starting 11 on for his last two matches to much success, and therefore we can expect a very similar lineup for this match against Uruguay.

Goalkeeper: Lloris

Defenders: Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Herenandez

Midfielders: Pogba, Kante, Dembele

Forwards: Greizmann, Mbappe, Giroud

Will There Be A Penalty or Red Cards?

Throughout the World Cup 2018, many players and pundits alike have been complaining about the sudden increase in penalties being awarded.

This is due to the use of VAR in this tournament, and this has made it all the more likely that there will be a penalty in the quarter final match between Uruguay and France.

Odds of a Penalty in the Uruguay vs France Match: 7/5

Red cards, on the other hand, aren't to be expected so much.

Whilst we do think there will be at least a few yellow card bookings, a red at this stage will put each team's semi-final chances at risk and therefore players from both sides will have to remain cool and collected.

Odds of a Red Card in the Uruguay vs France Match: 18/5
