Whilst all 32 competing teams in the World Cup 2018 have until the 4th of June to announce their final 23-man squads, many countries have already released a list of provisional players. Morocco managed Herve Renard announced which players he will be taking to Russia earlier this week, and from this we can gain some insight into who may make the stating 11.
The 23 players, plus three reserves, travelling to Russia with the Morroco international team are as follows:
- Mounir el Kajoui, Yassine Bounou, Ahmad Reda Tagnaouti, Mehdi Benatia, Romain Saiss, Manuel Da Costa, Badr Benoun, Nabil Dirar, Achraf Hakimi, Hamza Mendyl, Oualid El Hajjam, M’bark Boussoufa, Karim El Ahmadi, Youssef Ait Bennasser, Sofyan Amrabat, Younes Belhanda, Faycal Fajr, Amine Harit, Noussair Mazraoui, Kahlid Boutaib, Aziz Bouhaddouz, Ayoub El Kaabi, Nordin Amrabat, Mehdi Carcela, Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En Nesyri
Of these players, 11 will start in Morocco’s first match of the tournament, which will be against Iran on the 15th of June.
It is hard to say who will be featured in the Morrocan starting 11 at the moment, although we can make a few predications based around which players have performed well for their Clubs this past season.
For instance, Mehdi Carcela has been instrumental in taking his club, Standard Liege to second place in the Belgian league this year. Similarly, Achraf Hakimi was promoted to the Real Madrid main squad this year, which should make him a great contender for the starting 11. Medhi Benatia is also a favourite to start, as he has not only a great club record at Juventus, but an impressive record so far for Morocco too.
