Riders

Tour de France 2018 will include 176 riders at the beginning of the competition. The complete riders list is now confirmed by most teams, so let’s take a look. Who will ride in France this year? And who has the best odds?

This number of participants is lower than that in the previous editions of the event. But this doesn’t mean the 105th edition will be any worse than the ones before. Quite the contrary. The road should now be safer and less crammed, so there will be more space for action.

At the bottom of this article is the full list of participants as it is known today – see if you can find your favourites. Yet, first we’ll tell who are the favourites of our experts.

Tour de France Teams Review

Tour de France doesn’t invite players to participate in the race individually and personally. Instead, it’s UCI that governs who races in France’s major tour. They do this by selecting teams instead.

All of the teams that belong to the highest tier called UCI WorldTeams have no choice. They are obliged to send some of their selected members into all the World Tour events. Tour de France is just one of many of those.

It’s then up to these teams to decide who exactly they will send. That’s usually based on the rider’s skill, performance, specialty, current shape and other factors.

There are 18 teams that qualify to the competition this way. Four other teams from the lower tier qualify by performing well in other cycling sports events. These are called continental teams and in 2018 they are:

  • Cofidis
  • Direct Énergie
  • Fortuneo–Samsic
  • Wanty–Groupe Gobert

Tour de France Riders 2018

It was just recently announced that the number of participants will change. Each team will send eight riders into the race rather than nine.

There are 22 teams in total in Tour de France, which means 176 racers. All of them will be racing at the same time in most of the stages.

As already mentioned, the riders are selected on the basis of their skill and performance. Team members have different roles they have to fulfill. This comes into play very clearly when selecting the best squad.

There’s usually one top rider in the team who is the most promising. Other team members are there to support him in different situations and stages. Of course, it isn’t always that rigid and things sometimes turn out differently.

The riders aren’t only French but come from all around the world. This includes Africa, the Americas and the Pacific. French and Belgians have always been more frequent in this race, but this has been changing in the recent years.

Chris Froome and Other Best Cyclists

Most of the fans don’t know each of the Tour de France participants and we can’t blame them. There are almost 200 of them, coming from all around the world.

Instead, the attention is usually focused on the top cyclists. They are expected to claim the highest places in the general and other classifications.

Everybody knows Chris Froome, Romain Bardet, Peter Sagan, Mark Cavendish, Nairo Quintana, Rigoberto Uran and others. But few know Greg Van Avermaet or Elie Gesbert.

The names above are known among Tour de France fans for a reason. Only the most promising professionals are sent to this event, so these are the best among the best.

Tour de France riders are the world’s best road cyclists, but some are still better than the others. That’s why their odds differ so much.
